With its 31ha, Rhijnauwen is the largest fort of the Dutch Water Line and was built in the second half of the 19th century. The line was built to defend Utrecht and Holland against attacks from the east. The fort has a reduit (an inner fort) where the defenders could retreat when the rest of the fort had fallen.
Because the fort was closed to the public for years, rare animals and plants now live there.
In winter, hundreds of bats hibernate in the fort.
Visiting the fort is only possible during the guided tours of Staatbosbeheer.
