"There is archaeological evidence that people have lived in this area since at least the Iron Age (ca. 700 BC). Undoubtedly, it would have been an inhospitable peaty swamp forest at the time. Man also lived in this area in Roman times. On the south side, remains of an old brick kiln have been found.
A charter from 1219 shows that there was already a large farm on Soeterbeek with the name Hof Soeterbeek on the Ing (topo map). The farm even had a turret and was surrounded by a moat. Hof Soeterbeek was a fief of the Count of Kessel. In 1279 the Duke of Gelder became the owner. These changes continued until the French Era. In 1912 the last remnants of the farmhouse were demolished. It was popularly referred to as 't kesjtiel (castle). Around 1913, Inger Toën (Toon Hendriks) built a new farm on the old foundation." source: information board bracket track at the Kwistbeek.
