In the course of the 19th century, the Tilburg textile industry, now mechanized with the help of steam, was looking for ways to supply and remove the products for coal. The roads at that time were not suitable for the supply and removal of coal and textiles respectively. At the beginning of the 20th century, the plans for the construction of a canal finally became concrete. In 1910 the digging started and in 1916 the first ship docked in Tilburg. However, it was not until 1923 that the 68 km long Wilhelmina Canal was completed.
