Borgharen, in Limburgish Hare, was a former Dutch municipality that merged in 1970 with the municipality of Maastricht. Archaeologists have discovered eleven archaeological sites in the region. The oldest remains date back to the Stone Age, around 7000-4000 years ago. During the Iron Age, the settlement increased in size. Around the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, a Roman villa was located in the area. Remains of it were discovered in 1995 and 1999 on Pasestraat to the north of Borgharen, at the border with Itteren. At the same location, there was a cemetery in the 6th and 7th centuries.
