The nature reserve on and around the Bemelerberg is so special that the Limburg Landscape Foundation decided to protect this area as early as 1942.
It was and still is the only Dutch growth site of the mountain gamander. That tradition lives on and other flora and fauna, such as wild orchids and rare butterflies, also found their place here.
The Mergelland sheep are called upon to help with the management. He deftly grazes the hills and thus keeps the landscape open. As a hiker you can enjoy spectacular views over flowery grasslands and impressive marl walls with entrances to the marl quarries.
These subterranean spaces were created by the extraction of marl and are nowadays only used by bats.
