At the Drielandenpunt, near the Wilhelmina Tower, you can find the kite monument.
On 27 June 1932, Lieutenant 1st Class C.A. Weemhof and Sergeant-Plane-Maker-Pilot W.J. Nijhof took off from airfield 'De Kooy' in Den Helder to make a training flight.
They were accompanied by two more planes. Above the Vaalser forest, the plane got into trouble. The bystanders thought it was going to land on the meadow, which served as an airfield. However, the plane crashed for reasons that are still inexplicable.
Every five years, a commemoration is held on June 27 (2017). A monument has been erected on the spot in memory of the fallen airmen.
The monument is made of stone. At first it was equipped with a wooden propeller. However, this was later replaced by one made of aluminum.
