In the hillside forests between Berg and Meerssen lies a former marl quarry, the Curfsgroeve. Marl was mined here for more than 70 years. Part of it is closed to the public because of the safety of falling rocks, but also because of the presence of special natural values. Now that the Limburg Landscape Foundation has taken over the management, it has made the quarry partly accessible to the public. For this purpose, a footpath has been constructed on the west side.
That turned out to be easier said than done, a staircase of no less than 30 meters high takes the hiker from one level to another. From the viewpoint you can look over and into the quarry to the 50-metre-high steep walls and the deep quarry floor. Wind and weather have free rein in the quarry. Chunks of stone regularly fall down. Due to its deep location, the sun's radiation is intense and the heat is retained for a long time. The shady forest slopes, on the other hand, are cool and damp. As a result, there are many special plants and animals. A herd of Dutch land goats keeps the shrub and forest formation within limits with their grazing behaviour.
