West Battery Muiden

Description

Welcome to Muiden, a beautiful old fortified town. The name Muiden comes from the medieval name of the city Amuda. This means: at the mouth of the 'A'. The A is the old name of the river Vecht.

The town is therefore located at the mouth of the Vecht, which is a strategically important place. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it grew into an important fortified town. This is a town that protects a strategic location, in this case Amsterdam. In a town focused on defense, you will find many ramparts and canals. Muiden also has a fort and a battery for the protection of the town.

Muiden is also known for its locks. These primarily serve a military function. Thanks to the Zuiderzee, the river Vecht, several large bodies of water, and those locks, one could start flooding: intentionally putting areas underwater. It was here in Muiden, in 1672, that Holland withdrew behind a water line and managed to halt French troops thanks to inundations. This marked the beginning of the Old Dutch Water Line. Since 1816, Muiden has been part of the New Dutch Water Line. And from 1892, the city was part of the Amsterdam Defense Line.

In 1926, the fortification of Muiden was formally abolished. Nevertheless, there are still many elements in the city that refer to its past as a fortress and a town along the water line. Let yourself be enchanted by this charming historic town. Your walk today starts at the West Battery.

West Battery Muiden

Here you stand in front of the West Battery. This is a tower fort, built to defend the Netherlands and the harbor of Muiden along the water.

Despite its medieval appearance, the fort was only built in 1852. You can immediately see that it is entirely made of brick. With those bricks, beautiful masonry was done inside. There are curved wall surfaces and circular vaults. Cannons could be placed in and on the tower. There was also a drawbridge and a moat of no less than 8 meters wide.

Unfortunately, the fort soon became outdated. It was no longer usable when a grenade was invented that caused brick walls to collapse immediately. And then? The moat closed up. The roof was covered with soil. And the fort was no longer used for defense. In the 1960s, mushrooms were grown in the gun rooms. Later, in the 1970s, it became the base for the sea scouts. They were the ones who ensured that the fort was excavated and restored.

So now you can immediately see what that beautifully crafted fort was originally used for: defense.
