Rijksweg 68, Gronsveld: Gronsveld Castle
The current castle was built in 1833 as a country house by the Gadiot family from Maastricht. It was built on the foundations of one of the round towers of a former rectangular castle built around 1300. Remains of the three other corner towers and intervening walls are still present. During the construction of the house from brick and natural stone, the remains of the old castle were partly reused. The fully restored marl castle has acquired its characteristic Victorian appearance through a major renovation around 1880. In 1880, the mansion was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style and a number of turrets were added at the corners. At the same time, an orangery was built against the remains of the north-eastern castle wall. On the main road, the castle has a gatehouse dating from 1881 with a gate tower in neo-Gothic style with neoclassical elements. In the park around the castle, in addition to some centuries-old beeches and chestnuts, you will find the oldest tulip tree in Limburg. This park is also worth a visit!
