To combat erosion, hedges were planted on deforested slopes used as arable land in South Limburg. The planting of hedges helped to prevent soil material from washing away. As material washed up against the hedges and material washed away behind the hedges, ditches or steep edges (also referred to as a graaf or hill bend in South Limburg) gradually formed, dividing clay slopes in the Limburg hill country into less steep terraces.
Since the 19th century, many ditches have disappeared due to land consolidation and scale enlargement. Sometimes the location of a former ditch can still be recognized by a steep edge in a parcel. Often the ditches have been completely plowed away.
