North of Deventer, the IJssel has a winding course over large lengths in an old plain. The Northern IJssel is a real sedimentary sand river that can accommodate both flowing side channels and hanken or strangen. Hanken or strangen are usually non-tapped gullies, up to 2 to 3 m deep, that are not in continuous connection with the IJssel. Hanken or strangen are strongly fed by seepage water (both groundwater and river water).
The IJssel was restricted by human hands at an early stage and flowing secondary channels have disappeared and / or been transformed into hanken some time ago. Spontaneous formation of secondary channels and sandbanks has become physically impossible due to the large-scale recording of the IJssel banks with bank dumping (quarry stone). Both flowing secondary channels and non-tapped channels can be realized again by floodplain design.
