Together with the Ammeloër Venn (located across the German border), the Haaksbergerveen (more than 600 hectares in size) is part of the remains of a vast raised bog area. In the Haagsbergerveen, peat extraction has been small-scale, creating a varied landscape. The area is characterized by soggy raised bogs and wide heathlands, interspersed with bushes and grasslands.
The westernmost part of the Haaksbergerveen is called the Armenveen. There was very little peat here. Through the church or the marke, the poorest people were given permission to cross peat here.
Due to peat extraction and dewatering, the raised bog has become rare. Staatsbosbeheer now retains as much rainwater as possible, so that the raised bog can develop further.
