Millen Castle

Millen Castle or Millen House is a ruin near Sittard in Dutch Limburg, just behind the border with the German village of Millen, consisting of a keep from the fourteenth century, a section of the ring wall, and a heavier section of wall. Nothing remains of the first castle, which burned down in 1287, nor of the reconstruction. The rebuilt castle was so dilapidated in 1365 that another reconstruction was ordered. The current ruin probably dates from this second reconstruction. The last renovations likely took place in phases. During the battle between Guelders and Charles V, the castle is said to have been destroyed by both Maarten van Rossum and René van Chalon. However, what actually happened here is not known. At the diet of Gulik-Kleef-Berg, it was decided to demolish the castles of Born and Millen. However, during this time only Born was demolished; Millen was not taken down until the eighteenth century.
