The Kerkeweerd zone is one of the most species-rich areas in the Meuse valley. Less than 40 hectares of former gravel extraction are home to almost 400 plant species and countless special insects such as the small fritillary butterfly, blue-winged grasshopper, southern heather dragonfly and brown corn leg.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the Kerkeweerd still consisted largely of communal pasture. In the course of the 20th century, this changed into a tree meadow landscape due to the planting of poplars. Subsequently, it was partly filled with the clayey cover soil and silt from the bed of the Meuse near Berg. This left two gully-shaped puddles. Between 1955 and 1975, the filled parts were used relatively extensively as pasture and hay meadows. After the high water of January 1995, the agricultural use ceased and in 1996 Limburgs landschap vzw and the Ark Foundation started with nature development.
