Genneperheide is a forest and heath area located southeast of Gennep. Adjacent to the north is the Looierheide. Its name is related to the oak bark that was harvested here for tanning leather.
Both areas were formed on river dunes of the Maas and Niers. These river dunes are low in lime. Around 1930, they were planted with conifers for the benefit of the coal mines, as they provided minewood. Three ponds are found here because the sand is deposited on river clay and loam, which is not water-permeable. These ponds host several rare plant species: water buttercup, water clover, water strawberry, knotweed fountain herb, marsh loosestrife, many-stemmed water sedge, water clover, lavender heath, small cranberry, and the like.
