Rott is one of the originally seven 'rotten' of the South Limburg village of Vijlen, which is located in the Dutch municipality of Vaals. Rott consists of about thirty houses along one long, gently sloping street that bears the same name. The hamlet is located west of Vijlen, and to the west/northwest of Vaals. The Vijlenerbos forest lies to the south of Rott. On the east side, the stream Hermensbeek springs forth at the foot of the Vijlenerbos.
The original meaning of the name is unclear: it can mean both 'red' and 'clearing' or 'deforestation'. The oldest references to Rott date back to the late Middle Ages. For instance, a document from around 1320 mentions around twenty properties in Vijlen, whose owners had to pay rents and/or leases to the lordship of Einrade. Among that list were properties in Rott. The spelling of the name changed from Rot, Rodt, and Roth to Rott. In 1665, according to records, about 251 people lived there, belonging to 64 families. In that count, the residents of Mamelis and probably also Melleschet were included.
