Bolensteinsestraat
If you look behind you you will see the Ridderhofstad Bolenstein. Hence the name of this street, which for centuries has led to the entrance to this originally medieval castle. On the brown sign at the entrance of Bolenstein you can read about the history of this special monument.
A hundred years ago, this was already an important shopping street for Maarssen. A blacksmith, a hairdresser, a café, a grocery store and butcher shop were located next to the vegetable, cheese and sweet shop. The street also gives access to the Harmonieplein with restaurants, shops and homes. This square is currently in full development.
In the upper left corner of the photo from 1910 you can just see a piece of the Heilig Hartkerk, located at the intersection of the Breedstraat and the Bolensteinsestraat. This church was built in 1885 on the site of a beer brewery. At the time of taking this photo, the church was only 25 years old.
This sign is part of the Past and Present walk along the most striking places and buildings of Maarssen. The images of the past are placed in such a way that you see the current situation from the same perspective as the photographer or artist of the time.
Route: Continue straight until the intersection with Raadhuisstraat.
