This photo shows Huis Ter Meer, one of the largest country estates that has ever stood on the Vecht. The house was built in 1710 on the site of the ruins of Castle Huys in Maarssen. The client, Vincent Maximilian Van Lockhorst, expanded his site considerably and created a beautiful garden, inspired by French gardens. They were very fashionable at the time. You will find a print of this garden later in the walk.
The photo was taken in 1900, two years before the demolition of the house.
Now it is impossible to imagine, but of the 150 country estates that once stood on the Vecht, about 80 have been demolished! Nevertheless, Stichtse Vecht is still the municipality with the most country estates within its borders. Maarssen has no fewer than 12 country estates, including Huys ten Bosch, Herteveld, Goudestein, Doornburgh, Cromwijck, Leeuwenburg, Leeuwenvecht and Gansenhoef.
This sign is part of the Past and Present walk along the most striking places and buildings of Maarssen. The images of the past are placed in such a way that you see the current situation from the same perspective as the photographer or artist of the time.
Route: Continue on the road and turn left at Huys ten Bosch onto Langegracht.
