Description

The Reformed Church or Great Church of Schermerhorn is a church that was taken into use in 1636. The church stands on a site where a church has been present since 1450.

The oldest known church was a chapel church of which it is known that it was already standing in 1450. This was enlarged to a cruciform church in 1526. In 1612, the church was largely destroyed during a violent storm, only to rise again as new two years later. In 1634, the church was demolished to be replaced by a Protestant church.

The floor of the church is raised above street level, serving as additional safety during storms and high water. In the church, the maritime past of Schermerhorn is prominent; a stylized harpoon tip can be recognized in the church's spire, ship models hang in the church, and ships can be recognized in the tombstones.

The organ dates from the second half of the 18th century and is attributed to Jacob Courtain from Emmerik. It was installed in the church in 1879.

The church is owned by the Reformed Community of Schermer and is only used as a church on special occasions.
