The town hall was designed by Leeghwater in 1630. It survived the fire of January 6 and 7, 1654.
This town hall also housed the weigh house. On the ground floor, there is still a weighing facility (De Waag), where cattle and products from agriculture and industry were formerly weighed.
On the first floor, you will find the council chamber, the mayor's room, and the secretary's office.
Today, the VVV Graft-De Rijp is located in the town hall. It also serves as a wedding venue. The town hall can only be visited under the guidance of a tour guide.
Pause here and take a stroll through the neighborhood.
As you walk through De Rijp and see the beautifully restored houses from the seventeenth century, you will understand why Jan Adriaanszn. Leeghwater referred to this as 'The best village in Holland' in the 17th century. With approximately 120 beautifully restored Rijksmonuments and 27 municipal monuments - including a large number of houses - the village has been declared a 'protected village view'.
On your walk, you will taste the bygone times. The Town Hall with De Waag, the Dutch Reformed (Great) Church (1655) - famous for its 23 stained glass windows -, the farms, and the wooden houses still look just as they did then. Guides are happy to tell you about the Rijper Glass, the Van der Heyden fire engine, and the herring and whaling trade...
