The Netherlands
The well-known restaurant De Nederlanden has welcomed guests for more than 350 years. The right part was built in 1680 as an inn. It was one of the inns that were located on the towpath, a path along the Vecht over which the horse that pulled the barge walked. Until well into the 19th century, this was the means of transport par excellence in our water-rich country. The inns were the stops where one could get on or off, eat and sleep. When carriages took over the function of the barge, a stable was built next to the inn to accommodate horse and carriage. In the photo from 1900 the stable is clearly visible. The stable doors have been replaced by the high french doors of the restaurant. When Vreeland got its own train station in 1843, the inn became the departure point of the omnibus to the station. The road that runs next to De Nederlanden is not called the Spoorlaan for nothing, although the station is long gone!
Walk past De Nederlanden and turn right into Spoorlaan. On the left is CSV Ridderhof, on the site of the former public school.
