Experience hidden Rome in an underground labyrinth!
A visit to the Roman Catacombs Museum is a fascinating and unforgettable experience. Wandering through the subterranean corridors, visitors travel back in time, to ancient Rome from the third and fourth centuries.
You descend to the tombs of ordinary Roman citizens and to the beautiful, colorful burial chambers of prominent Romans. The museum was founded in 1910 by Jan Diepen, the son of a wealthy textile industrialist in collaboration with the famous architect Pierre Cuypers.
The richly decorated crypts (about 25 meters below the earth's surface) are overwhelmingly beautiful. The paintings reveal special stories, ancient rituals, and surprising scenes from everyday life.
The museum also offers a fascinating current program with exhibitions, events and experiences. You create a special day out by combining a guided tour with a Roman lunch.
