The Von Clermont House

In the 18th century, the industrialist Johann Arnold Von Clermont had this Von Clermont House built in Vaals. He set it up as a cloth factory and partly used it as a home and office. At the time, wool was woven, pressed and dyed. Nowadays it serves as the town hall of Vaals.

Von Clermont's constructions have also left traces in the soil. In the vicinity of the Von Clermont House, many remains of the old buildings have been found. The Von Clermont House originally had four wings. In the courtyard a wallwork of this former fourth wing was found. Remains of walls have been found in front of the town hall, which probably belonged to the walls of the estate.

Various elements of the cloth industry are reflected in the design of the public space on and around the Koningin Julianaplein. The influence of Von Clermont with his cloth industry is prominently expressed here: a canvas terrace that refers to the drying place of the cloths, a market carpet with a woven motif and a real paint basin in the courtyard of the town hall, with which the dyehouse is visualized in a special way.

On the site of the Von Clermont garden (next to the Copper Mill) the Clermont garden has been realized. Vaals' textile past is also made visible in the motifs of the paving.
