Description

Through this gate on the Grote Markt, the coffin containing Hugo de Groot was carried into the home of the friendly merchant Adriaan Daetselaar. It was the back entrance of his house on Gasthuisstraat. Together with bricklayer Jan Lambertszoon, Hugo then left the house through the same gate, dressed as a bricklayer's servant.
Right next to this most photographed door of Gorinchem is nowadays a coffee bar with the name 'Hugo'...
