You now walk on the historic towpath through Vreeland. The towpath was built along the Vecht in 1628 to shorten the travel time by water. The horse -or man- who pulled the barge could walk over it. During the construction of the path, some bends were also cut off to shorten the sailing route, such as at the Nes and at Nederhorst. However, the Vecht that flows through Vreeland was already cut off at the beginning of the 15th century. The 'old' Vecht runs in a sharp bend around the village. The fact that they wanted to shorten all that time-consuming bend indicates the importance of the Vecht as a transport route. The towpath runs directly past the houses and is already publicly accessible from the construction. Traditionally, all residents on a towpath must give the walker the right of way.
