The Nes was created by cutting off an old Vechtarm in 1625 to promote passage across the Vecht. This cut-off created an island of 14 ha. This was bought in 1633 by the Amsterdammer Pieter Reaal, after whom the island was named 'Realeneiland'. His grandson built a beautiful country estate here in 1687-88, which he named Huys te Nigtevecht. It was a very special and modern house with one of the first houses along the Vecht a triple expanded dome hall. This house was demolished in 1827. In 1927 the water became the property of Provinciale Waterstaat. He sold part of it for the construction of the Hilversum canal. Ballast Nedam bought part of the Nes in 1931 and sucked up sand for, among other things, the construction of the opposite site from the Blankevoort company. As a result, the island has largely disappeared and a lake has been created. The remains of the island have belonged to Natuurmonumenten since 1982. Around it are several permanently inhabited houseboats.
