From here you have a view of Fort Hinderdam. This fort reminds of the dam with locks that was built here in 1437 to limit flooding from the Zuiderzee. Of course, the dam hindered transport by water, hence the name. At the beginning of the 17th century, an earthenware redoubt was placed here, which in turn was replaced by a fort in 1673. The purpose of the fort was to control traffic on the Vecht and on the Vechtdijken. It could also support the neighboring forts (Ossenmarkt and Uitermeer) with the guns. At the fort on island in the Vecht belonged two more lunettes. The northern lunette can still be recognized in the landscape as an island around which the dike road goes with a bend. The fort was part of the Old and New Dutch Water Line and of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. It is now owned by Natuurmonumenten and is located on the Waterliniepad. www.stellingvanamsterdam.nl
