The church was built around 1394, when the inhabitants of Venloon were forced to move their village and leave the stone Sint-Willibrord church built in 1233 due to the advancing drifting sand.
Originally, the St. John's Beheading Church was a rectangular hall church in Romanesque style, but already around 1400 the church was expanded with a choir in Gothic style, in 1410 the transept followed and in 1450 the tower. In 1570 a renovation followed, in which the church more or less got its current shape.
