The unveiling of the Zamenhof monument in Bergen op Zoom took place in 1933. A well-known attendee included Lidia Zamenhof, the daughter of Ludoviko Zamenhof.
During the Second World War, the monument was partially destroyed by the Nazis. In 1983 the monument was fully restored. The monument consists of 3 parts: a pedestal, a column and a sphere. The pedestal is solid and white and symbolizes the great strength with which Zamenhof created Esperanto. The pedestal has the shape of a five-pointed star that symbolizes that the language is intended for all five continents. The column is also five-pointed and green, the color of the heap. On the column is a sphere, where the five points meet and are connected by the words 'Esperanto - mondlingvo'. This symbolizes that Esperanto is meant for all people and that it connects all people.
