Café Mie Pieters is located in the greenery between Tilburg and Oisterwijk. A popular stopping place for walkers and cyclists. For a snack, a drink and for a social get-together. A cozy café with a warm character, due to the authentic wooden interior and the historic (restored) murals.
The café at Laag Heukelomseweg 13 in Heukelom is actually located on the border of Tilburg, Berkel, Enschot, Moergestel and Oisterwijk. Within walking distance of all these villages was the café with the 'romantic' name 'Jagers en Vissers Lust'.
Maria Isabella Pieters was born in Leende in 1854 and has always remained unmarried. For 64 years she lived and worked in Laag Heukelom, where from 1924 she received help from her cousin Mie from Beesd, who later continued the café with her husband Piet Koolen (from Oisterwijk). In 1930 Mie stopped working as an innkeeper and in 1936 she died in the RK Gasthuis in Oisterwijk.de
Mie Pieters was a woman with personality, according to tradition. She rented the inn from 'Mr' Van den Bergh (woollen fabric manufacturer in Tilburg?), who regularly came to her café after the hunt to take a breather and have a drink. She was a "sensible and noble woman, with a keen eye for events and conditions. He could get along with anyone, whether it was Johnny Sponge, Panis Venus or a more sedentary citizen'. "In the past, the gentlemen of Van den Berg often went hunting in the area. This farm belonged to Louike van den Berg and he turned it into a hunting lodge. When the gentlemen were tired of hunting or fishing, they came here to rest, of course with the necessary drinks! Louike van den Berg then leased it to Mie Pieters."
Journalist Pierre van Beek wrote this story in 1964 from the mouth of 'Fransje', an old regular of the famous café on the heath in the middle of Tilburg, Oisterwijk and Berkel-Enschot.
"Look," Fransje continues, "there wasn't a good road in the area. Here was only the heath, the forest and here and there some swamp. All the people here from the area lived off the moor, just like me, we tied a hare every now and then, or we caught a few fish, and we lived off that. But there was no cinema here, or other things to entertain us with. We only had Mie and Mie was really everything to us. You couldn't get there unless she was ready for you. It was all kindness, but she was also simple. He was a wonderful person. I was happy to go there, because if I hadn't caught anything for a while and I was hungry, I could go to Mie. She gave away everything she had. Around here, almost all marriages from that time were linked by Mie Pieters, although she never married herself. When she left, everyone hated it. The café continued to be called Jagers- en Visserslust, but people called it Mie Pieters from then on, which is why Piet Coolen made it a double name."
Mie Pieters is still a popular place to take a break, if not hunting or fishing, then walking or cycling on the Marikenpad. Source: cubra
