Near the current Lamgats Bridge there used to be a ferry connection across the Mark between Hoeven and Zevenbergen. The ferry right was in the possession of the Abbot of St. Bernard's Abbey, but in 1564 it came into the hands of the Marquis of Bergen op Zoom. After 1648 this ferry became of great importance. In 1651, the postal route from Antwerp to Amsterdam came to run over this ferry. In the French era, this came to an end after the construction of the national road for north-south traffic along Breda and Terheijden, the current A16. The ferry then became of local significance.
In 1885 a bridge was built, but it was blown up by the Dutch troops in 1940. The same year a new bridge was built, but it was blown up in 1944, this time by the Germans. After that there was another ferry until 1968, when it was discontinued. It was not until 1985 that a new bridge was built.
