The meandering Geul

The Geul is an idyllic stream that meanders considerably, or meanders through the landscape. Because the Geul flows this stretch, the water in the outer bends wears away the bank. In the inner bends, the water flows less fast and the sand and mud that have been carried away remain there. For example, there is a steep bank in the outer bends and a flat bank in the inner bends.

Due to the continuous force of the flowing water, the curves become sharper and sharper. This can go as far as it takes until the twisty loops meet. Then the water chooses the shortest route again and the unused loop silts up again. In this way, the flow of the Geul shifts through the landscape. The natural course of the Geul provides a beautiful picture.
