Half-timbered houses with dark beams and whitewashed clay are characteristic of the South Limburg hills. What is special about this half-timbered farmhouse is that it is one of the few buildings in the Netherlands that has no foundations. The rock on which Hoeve Vernelsberg was built in 1323 was formed about 300 million years ago and is rock hard. Two of the stables and the bakehouse are built of local bluestone. During the Second World War, the cowshed was hit by a V1 bomb. Recently, the monumental farmhouse has been completely restored into a group accommodation.
