In South Limburg, some vegetated slopes have a kind of terrace structure, the so-called grafts. Hikers recognize grafts as clear "kinks" in an up or down slope. There is still no complete agreement on how they came to be. They may be remnants of arable farming of the first peasant inhabitants of South Limburg, the Bandkeramiekers.
It can also be naturally formed limestone or a remnant of medieval grape growing. Grafts usually grow the same types of trees and plants, such as oak trees, walnut trees, hazelnut bushes, berry bushes and all kinds of herbs. The formation of the grafts remains a geological mystery for the time being; unique for the South Limburg landscape!
Want to know more about geological treasures? VVV Zuid-Limburg has published a walking map with the name 'Geological treasures in the Geuldal'. This is available at the VVV Branches.
