The church of Holset is the great eye-catcher of this picturesque village. The church, which is visited from all over the country to get married, has a central place on the village square. The hamlet of Holset is a good place to stay in good weather. Visitors will find several terraces here that offer a beautiful view of the unique South Limburg landscape. Holset itself has a long history dating back to pre-history.
There are already stories from around 360 AD that St. Servatius was active as a missionary in this area. In 515, St. Falco, bishop of Maastricht, is said to have consecrated the temple of Baal as a church. This is the origin of the veneration of St. Genoveva in Holset. In 692, St. Lambert and St. Willibrord visited the small village of Holset. According to legend, the spring was poisoned by the god Baal when the inhabitants converted to Christianity.
Lambert blessed the spring, after which a hellish dragon came out, which disappeared forever. Hence the source is still called Lambertusbron. In the 8th century, the church was rebuilt into a hall church, the remains of which are still in the north wall of the current church. Emperor Lothair III had the church enlarged in 1136. The Lambertuskerk has been radically renovated to its current form several times.
Over the centuries, the veneration for St. Genoveva has continued and the church still attracts many pilgrims to this day.
