In recent years, a new forest has been established along the N276 Brunssum-Sittard in Brunssum. This Trichterbos, covering an area of six hectares, was made possible thanks to ENCI and the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem. They had reserved money for necessary compensation under the Forest Act but did not have land available. The municipality of Brunssum did have six hectares of land available but lacked the funds for complete reforestation.
What is special about the Trichterbos is the groups of linden trees that have been planted here and there. Lindens attract bees, which is one reason these trees have been planted. But there are more reasons. The linden forests are among the most beautiful in Europe, like those found in England and Switzerland. They are open trees, which allows a lot of light to enter the forest. As a result, and because the leaves decompose quickly, a very beautiful ground vegetation develops.
