Puth, together with Doenrade, is located on a plateau (the Plateau of Doenrade) where an old Roman trade route runs, from Germany towards Maastricht. This connecting road is now called the Maastrichterweg. It The origin of Puth is probably due to this trade route. Despite the high elevation of the area in question, a population nevertheless arose here due to the presence of very fertile and easy to work soil.

The name Puth is most likely derived from the deep wells and was first mentioned in a deed from 1377. It mentions a knight, answering to the name of John of Putte.

Puth has traditionally belonged to Schinnen and has only been in Schinnen since the beginning of the 20th century a full-fledged church village. Prior to that, it consisted of a number of incoherent hamlets, including Lower Puth, Upper Puth and 't Einde. In the sixties and seventies of the 20th century, the village had its strongest growth through the construction of a residential area to the southeast of the core. Many of the old buildings has been lost, also because of the construction of the new connecting road with Geleen. A number of half-timbered houses have been preserved, of which some can be qualified as high-quality. Fragments are also found of half-timbered courtyards, mainly in Upper Puth. Here and there one still encounters clusters of a closed building, which are the remains of of the former whole.

·       Upper Puth 1, half-timbered house from the 1st half of the 19th century.

·       Kerkweg 153, half-timbered house from 1628, interior with 17th century stucco ceiling.

In the past, there were many large farms, often with dozens of hectares soil. Very little of this remains.

·       The Mahove and Hautvast farms at Geineinde are still some remnants of the past.

·       Farmhouse Kerkweg 133, square farmhouse with half-timbering from the 18th century. The brick street façade dates from the 1st half of the 19th century.

There are a number of slopes around the village, including the Keldenaar, the Putherberg and the Zandberg. To the southwest of the village is the Stammenderveld, a spur of the plateau that has a maximum height of 109.3 m above NAP. The area is popular with cyclists and hikers because of the many climbs, rolling landscapes and vistas. The Pieterpad and the Pilgrim's path to Puth. Immediately southeast of Puth one finds the Putherberg, on the edge of the plateau, at an altitude of 108 meters.

To the north of Puth is the nature and recreation area Wanenberg, and to the southwest the Stammenderbos. On the plateau, the agriculture.
