Mulderplas

The Mulderplas is a small, but surprisingly natural recreation area in the Geleenbeek valley near the hamlet of Thull in the municipality of Beekdaelen. The Mulderplas is a fish pond surrounded by small-scale and species-rich nature.
Here you can walk or cycle along the pond in peace accompanied by herons, frogs and dragonflies. Along the shore, the yellow iris blooms and fishermen enjoy the peace and quiet. The kingfisher skims over the Geleenbeek and wooden boardwalks lead you over vulnerable and otherwise impassable nature.
From mud pond to natural monument
The current Mulderplas used to look very different. Before the arrival of the South Limburg mines, there was not even a lake and there was a medieval grain mill here.
Around 1960, the State Mines bought this area to turn it into a large mud pond. After the mine closures, it was eventually redeveloped into the current nature reserve.
