Munnikenmolen

The Munnikkenmolen is a seesaw mill on the outskirts of Leiderdorp, along the Dwarswatering. The mill was built in 1890 for the drainage of the Munnikkenpolder, as a replacement for a mill that burned down in that year. There has been a mill on the site of the Munnikkenmolen since 1566. The mill served until 1958. In that year, a pumping station was built that took over the drainage. In 1964 the municipality of Leiderdorp bought the mill. The location of the mill, near a highway and against a residential area, has now become unfavorable due to plans by the Leiderdorp municipality to build high-rise buildings around it. There are therefore voices in the city council to move the mill, which local residents oppose (2009).

On April 21, 2009, the municipality of Leiderdorp decided to move the mill, under fierce protest from the local residents. The mill, together with two other mills from the region, will form a "mill carousel": the Meerburgermolen has been moved from Zoeterwoude to the Munnikenpolder in Leiderdorp, the Kalkpoldermolen from Leiderdorp will be moved to the Doespolder in the municipality of Kaag en Braassem, while the Munnikenmolen will remain in Leiderdorp, but will be moved to the Munnikenpolder.

The mill is now ready for grinding in the Munnikenpolder.
