Through the nature reserve De Brand runs another small waterway called "Zandlei." It was dug in the 1960s to drain the partially purified water from the Tilburg wastewater treatment plant.
This had two disadvantages: It drew valuable spring water away from the area and during flooding, unwanted wastewater was brought into this nature reserve.
Now, that water is drained via the Zandkantse Lei as it was also done until the 1960s.
The possibility of flooding is now accepted because it only affects a less vulnerable willow forest.
The Zandlei is being closed off in phases. The expectation is that in the coming years the entire Brand will become significantly wetter.
