The Reindersmeer was created in the last century by sand and gravel extraction. Between 1971 and 2001, more than 22,000 ships full of construction materials sailed to the Meuse via a specially built lock complex.
Some of the banks have been flattened after the excavation work was completed, but not everywhere and for a reason: the steep walls are important breeding grounds for shore swallows, which stay in the warm south in winter. The kingfishers are here to stay. They also like to dig their nesting cavities on the edges of the Reindersmeer.
