Believe it or not, until about 1850 the important trade route from Antwerp via Hilvarenbeek to Tilburg and further north ran along "De Rook".
Of course, an important trade route also includes a toll house, and that was here with the name "The White House". On old maps you can also read the name "De Rook" just like on the façade of the house that you see here a short distance from the Dutch-Belgian border.
In this area the armies faced each other during the Belgian War of 1830 and even longer ago, in 1794, the French general Pichegru and his men passed "De Rook" on their way to 's-Hertogenbosch.
