Windlust windmill Nieuwerkerk aan de IJssel

Windlust is a restored windmill in Kortenoord near Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel. The mill has been a national monument since 1999 and is located on the Hollandsche IJssel (Kortenoord district). This stone mill was originally built circa 1780. Before this, there was a wooden post mill on the same site. In 1952 the mill was partially demolished, but remained in use as a storage facility for a grain company.

During the last restoration, the scaffolding mill was moved about 8 meters and raised by 4.5 meters: a day center (for people with intellectual disabilities) was built under the old mill. The interior of Windlust has been rebuilt. The mill now contains three pairs of grinding stones and a mixer, all wind-driven. At the bottom of the mill there is a shop selling souvenirs and grain products.

The mill is owned by the Windlust Mill Conservation Committee and is managed by the Kortenoord Mill Foundation. This foundation rebuilt the mill. The mill was officially opened on 21 May 2005. The mill is open for viewing every Wednesday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (also by appointment). The mill has a tearoom that is managed by the day centre. This day centre also supplies the bread and pastries sold in the tearoom, which is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on the second Saturday of the month in the summer months.
