Windmill The Rose Delft

The Roos is the last remaining windmill of the fifteen windmills that once stood on the city walls of Delft. The mill serves as a grain mill and operates regularly.

In the 1980s, it was observed that the mill began to lean due to subsidence caused by drainage, a filled-in water body that was next to the mill, and excavations. The foundation "Molen de Roos" started a three-year fundraising campaign for restoration. After restoration works, the mill was ceremonially opened on September 28, 1990, by Prince Claus. In the attic of the mill, there is a permanent exhibition "Delft Windmills." There is also a shop for flour products located there.

In connection with the construction of the railway tunnel, De Roos was transferred to ProRail in December 2009 for the duration of the tunnel's construction. Initially, the foundation of the mill was reinforced in the form of a reinforced concrete slab under the mill and its extension. This concrete slab was supported by 45 steel piles. On July 4, 2012, the mill was lifted up by one meter on these steel piles to allow for tunnel construction. Afterwards, the ground under the concrete slab was removed, and the supporting structure of the tunnel (essentially the roof of the tunnel) was installed. On December 12, 2012, the mill was lowered again and has since stood on the roof of the tunnel. In 2013, the temporarily removed sails of the mill were reattached, and on September 4, 2013, the Netherlands Windmill Association, owner since 1926, regained management of the mill. The mill has been grinding again since January 2015.

The mill can be visited when the blue flag is out, and fixed operating days are Thursday and Saturday.
