A little further downstream is the Lower Mill, which is also called the Commander's Mill. That name is derived from the Commander. That was the leader of the monastic order Malthezer commandery. Initially it was a grain mill, later only a paper mill until that part was destroyed by fire in 1874.
The present brick mill building must have been built in 1876. Unfortunately, it turned out to be impossible to make white paper because the Geul was seriously polluted by the zinc and lead ore mines in Bleyberg. As a result, the company, which managed the mill and paper industry, went bankrupt.
After the public sale, paper mill was rebuilt and modernized into a grist mill. After the Second World War, the use declined. Until in the seventies the demand for traditionally ground wheat and baking ray flour increased. The mill has been fully commissioned to this day.
