Pim Fortuyn Square

Pim Fortuyn was an active member of the PvdA until 1989 and later became a member of the VVD, but became well known as the leader of first Leefbaar Nederland and then his own Lijst Pim Fortuyn in the lead-up to the 2002 general elections. Fortuyn was murdered in May 2002 by Volkert van der Graaf at the Media Park in Hilversum, nine days before a predicted major victory for the LPF in the elections.

The Pim Foundation organizes an annual memorial on the anniversary of Fortuyn's death. A bus tour visits various locations, including Fortuyn's home, the Media Park in Hilversum, and the statue of Fortuyn on Korte Hoogstraat in Rotterdam. This statue was designed by Corrie Ammerlaan. On May 6, 2012, exactly ten years after the murder of Fortuyn, the section of Korte Hoogstraat where the statue stands was renamed Pim Fortuynplaats.
