This very old 50 kV river crossing over the Rhine near Wageningen is called The Black Giraffe and is the icing on the cake for a mastenspotter!.
That this river crossing survived the war may be called a small miracle, because during operation Market Garden there was heavy fighting and a few other river crossings at Arnhem were blown up to drop the masts into the river and thus hinder a passage of the Allies, a military tactic that was also used at Dordrecht, But this method had only limited success.)
To this day, this connection has stood the pace of nations and the test of time. For the time being, there are no demolition plans for this line (to bring the line underground), so you don't have to hurry if you still want to view it
The mast on the Wageningen side is a well-known place among students to sit in the sun or to have a barbecue. When they return home somewhat tipsy in the evening twilight, it will not surprise you that the high-voltage pylon is nicknamed Black Giraffe...
