This stately square was named in 1898 after the then Queen Wilhelmina. During the Second World War, the Germans changed the name to Maastrichterlaan. The original name was formally reinstated in 2013. The town hall of Vaals was once located here. During the war, it was also the location where the deportation of the Jews of Vaals took place.
That is why this is the start and end location of a so-called circular walk 'Joods Vaals' that takes you past the various points of Jewish history in Vaals. This walk dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. After the invasion of the German troops on 10 May 1940, reprisals against the Jews began a few weeks later. The deportations took place in the years 1942 and 1943. More information about this can be found on the information board on the square.
