The oldest traces of Jewish life in Vaals go back to at least 1737, the year in which mention is made of a Jewish inhabitant, who was present at the consecration of the Lutheran church (now cultural center de Koperhof). Right next to this former church is the monument to the Vaals victims of the war and the Nazi era. As far as we know, this monument also contains the names of all murdered Jews from Vaals.
