On the Waalstrand, remnants of Chinese mitten crabs regularly wash ashore, and those lucky enough might encounter a live crab! The Chinese mitten crab is not a native species, but it has found its place in the Netherlands. They migrate all the way to sea for mating season and then return. This happens with thousands at the same time. However, we don't see anything of it, as they stroll all together along the riverbed on their way to and from Hoek van Holland.
